UK-based geoscience firm Getech and transition energy company Sound Energy have established a new Moroccan-registered joint venture, HyMaroc Limited, to explore and potentially exploit natural hydrogen and helium reserves in the country.
The launch follows the completion of a regional screening study that identified promising zones across Morocco’s subsurface, Getech said Wednesday in a press release.
The newly incorporated HyMaroc Limited will lead efforts to secure exclusive exploration rights, paving the way for detailed geophysical studies and drilling operations.
«Morocco’s unique geology makes it one of the most promising frontiers for native hydrogen», said Max Brouwers, Chief Business Development Officer at Getech. He added that the country offers the right mix of favorable formations and regulatory support to attract global investment in clean energy transition resources.
Morocco’s extensive onshore basins, coupled with its growing reputation as a renewable energy hub, position it as a strategic player in the emerging natural hydrogen market. Known as «white hydrogen», the naturally occurring gas could become a cost-effective alternative to green hydrogen, while helium, often found in the same reservoirs, adds commercial value due to its critical industrial applications, the press release concluded.
